Parish Leaders Gather for a Day of Formation and Mission
On a day filled with prayer, reflection, and fellowship, the Church Governance Commission welcomed Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) leaders from across southwestern Manitoba to its annual workshop, “Our Calling as Participants in Christ’s Mission.” Representatives from 23 parishes gathered to deepen their understanding of leadership, share experiences, and renew their commitment to serving the Church’s mission.
Throughout the day, participants connected with fellow parish leaders, exchanged ideas, and reflected on the vital role they play in their parish communities. Through presentations by Rev. Darrin Gurr, Episcopal Vicar for Stewardship and Mission, and Rev. Gerald Langevin, Pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, attendees were invited to consider how their ministry extends beyond parish structures and into everyday life.
Reflecting on the day, Susan Cosens, a member of the Church Governance Commission, shared that she “sensed the presence of the Holy Spirit in the room throughout the day. People were engaged and animated in their discussions, and I was grateful to see how much participants enjoyed the experience.” Similarly, Sharon Camier felt that participants were genuinely eager to learn and gain insight into how to be effective PPC members, ready to support their pastor and parish community.
The day concluded with remarks from Archbishop Murray Chatlain, who reminded PPC leaders that we are all children of God. He encouraged them to remain humble while embracing a healthy confidence in the gifts God has given them, recognizing that much good work is already taking place in our parishes. A particularly meaningful moment followed as Archbishop Chatlain led participants in a prayer service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Each PPC leader received a candle as a symbol of Christ’s light and their shared call to serve; they received it in quiet humility, yet the fire of the Holy Spirit was certainly within them.
