The 21: A short film about Coptic martyrs

In February 2015, ISIS released a video online of the beheading of Christians on a beach in Libya. Ten years later, a short film honouring the 21 Coptic martyrs has been created. The film is animated in the style of Coptic iconography and was produced in collaboration with the global Coptic community and a team of more than 70 artists from more than 24 countries. These 21 men were declared martyrs by the Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church immediately. In 2023, Pope Francis added them to the Roman Martyrology.

Note, though animated, this film might be disturbing to some viewers as it shows the realities of the suffering these men experienced.

“Blessed are you, O martyrs. You suffered many tortures, and the sea testified, and you put on your crowns. Without words, you made your voices heard, and your voices have travelled to the ends of the earth.”
