Media Release from the CCCB: Archbishop Francis Leo
The Church in Canada rejoices with gratitude at the appointment of His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto, to the College of Cardinals. This event took place today in Vatican City at the Consistory presided over by His Holiness Pope Francis.
While Cardinal Leo will continue to serve the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Toronto as its local ordinary, his elevation to the College of Cardinals makes him an advisor to the Holy Father, an elector within a conclave to elect a new Pope when the papal seat becomes vacant, and a participant in Consistories, which are formal meetings of the Cardinals to discuss important Church matters.
The Cardinal’s membership in the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops does not change as a result of his elevation: he remains one of the four ex officio members on the Permanent Council as the Archbishop of Toronto and will continue to serve on the CCCB’s various Episcopal Commissions and other advisory bodies.
May God, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, be ever at his side, assist him in undertaking this new role of service and responsibility, and strengthen him in holiness, wisdom and compassion.
