Marriage Sponsor Couple Training: A Grace-Filled Day of Formation

On April 12, sponsor couples from across the Archdiocese of Winnipeg and the Archdiocese of Saint Boniface came together for a special joint formation session, focused on deepening their understanding of the Church’s renewed vision for marriage preparation. This session centred on Catechumenal Pathways for Married Life, a document released by Pope Francis, which outlines a transformative approach to preparing couples for the sacrament of marriage—one rooted in accompaniment, faith, and lifelong formation.

Special Guests: Ryan and Mary-Rose Verret

We were blessed to welcome Ryan and Mary-Rose Verret, authors of the Witness to Love marriage formation program, as our guest facilitators. Their gracious acceptance to lead the session via Zoom on very short notice. It was a true gift to our community.

With deep pastoral experience and a passion for renewing marriage ministry, Ryan and Mary-Rose shared insights on how sponsor couples can truly walk with engaged couples, offering support, witness, and an authentic relationship. They emphasized key catechumenal themes such as:

  • The power of relationship and mentorship
  • The importance of listening with empathy
  • Modelling the domestic Church in everyday life

Engaging Discussion and Reflection

Throughout the evening, participants had the opportunity to reflect on the document, engage in meaningful discussions, and share their personal experiences.

The openness of the session created a synodal space where listening, discerning, and journeying together allowed new perspectives to emerge. It was encouraging to see sponsor couples embrace the invitation to be part of a pastoral renewal in marriage preparation. Many expressed interest in exploring new formation models, and some showed openness to programs like Witness to Love.

A Step Forward for Our Dioceses

Although this session did not focus on a specific program, it successfully laid the groundwork for understanding the catechumenal approach. We were especially grateful for Ryan and Mary-Rose’s support in honouring our intention to keep the focus on Pope Francis’ vision, while still drawing from their rich experience in marriage ministry. This formation session represents an essential first step in a broader journey. As we continue to share the message of the marriage catechumenate with our clergy and parish leaders, we hope to foster a shared pastoral vision that supports couples more deeply on their path toward sacramental marriage.
