Honouring Our Public Safety Heroes
Last fall, St. Augustine of Canterbury Church in Brandon held its first “blue mass” to honour public safety personnel and inspire local students. The celebration served as a heartfelt tribute to police officers, firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers, and all first responders who dedicate their lives to protecting the community.
The service created a moment of reflection and gratitude, recognizing the courage and selflessness of those who run toward danger rather than away from it. Organizer Linda Chiupka shared that the purpose of the event was to strengthen children’s confidence in the people who serve and protect their community, emphasizing that first responders are there to support them. Rev. John Okosun led the mass, offering prayers and words of encouragement for those serving in law enforcement, fire services, paramedicine, corrections, and the military.
After the service, first responders invited students to explore emergency vehicles—including a police K9 unit, an armoured vehicle, an ambulance, and fire trucks—providing a hands‑on learning experience. Both students and first responders welcomed the initiative, celebrating the success of its first year.
