Archives & Sacramental Records

Please Note: If you require a past sacramental record for an upcoming sacrament (such as confirmation, marriage, holy orders) you likely need a CURRENT copy directly from the parish where the prior sacrament was recorded. Do not use the general request forms below if documents are required for sacramental purposes.

If you need assistance locating your record, please contact the Archives office directly.

Archival Research

The History of Our Archdiocesan Communities

The Archives of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Winnipeg serves in acquiring, preserving, organizing, and making available the records and materials relevant to telling the story of the archdiocese, its people and culture(s), its programs, parishes, and institutions.

Researchers may contact the Archives office with questions, and the Director of Archives will provide information on whether or not relevant records are available in our collections. We do not have a public research room – requests to view historical records must be made to the Archives office. If records are available, a research visit may be arranged with the Director of Archives.

Genealogy

Searching for Your Catholic Roots

The Archives of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Winnipeg genealogy research policy is responsive to requests by family members. Individuals may contact the Archives office to confirm the availability of the baptism or marriage records they require.

Access is restricted following the timelines of Canada’s Personal Information Protection legislation:

  • Birth registrations after 100 years
  • Marriage registrations after 75 years

The Archdiocese of Winnipeg Archives Office is not able to provide information for Death/Burial records.

Please check the parish locations map to determine if the church from which you need a record is within the administrative boundaries of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. This includes closed parishes and missions not currently listed on the map. However, sacramental records from outside this geographical area are not available at our office.

Sacramental record certificates include the original information from the entries found in the microfilm copy of the relevant parish register. Translation of original language is not provided.

Request forms are available for download below or in person at the Archdiocese of Winnipeg Catholic Centre. Our rates are $25 per record, and payment must accompany the signed and completed form.
