There is a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God,
the holy dwelling of the Most High.
God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed.
—Psalm 46:5–6

We often vacation in Pennsylvania Amish country, close to where I grew up. We stay in a wood cabin at the end of Eli Road. When we drive in by night, only a single lamp burns at the back of every house, and other than that there are only stars and moonlight over the mountains and fields. If you sit outside, all you hear are birds and the creek.

In my eyes, this place could be the city of God. And that creek, whose runlets certainly gladden our hearts and make the mountain ferns grow, no doubt has God in its midst. There’s little quiet in Chicago, but thankfully we have Lake Michigan, which carries its own great silence, even while the city screams.
