  • Visit to Selkirk Mental Health Centre:

    Posted on April 13, 2018

I was invited to celebrate the Liturgy with a large group of residents and staff at this historic facility established over 100 years ago to treat the mentally ill and those suffering from brain injuries as well as a variety of other mental and emotional traumas. The facility is very extensive and I was given a personal tour for over one hour. The Selkirk Mental Health Centre is a major public health facility in Manitoba. To read the history of this facility is to become aware of how attitudes and treatment of the mentally ill have changed over the past century. Interestingly. St. John Paul II made this one of his stops in Manitoba while visiting our province in 1984. Shown here at a distance is a rock with a plaque commemorating his visit. Also an outside view of some of the facilities.
